The gift shoppe business opened its doors in 1992 with the trio of Burr women at the helm- Ruth Burr Miller, Anita Burr Butts and Kitten Burr. It later transitioned to include custom framing, along with its quality merchandise including Yankee Candle, Tervis Tumbler, Homestead Lighting, Fiestaware and P.Buckley Moss prints. “What a joy and blessing it has been to enjoy..and love your job! The creative expression, interaction with people, independence, involvement with family, as well as being able to provide great products and services are some the wonderful parts of twenty years as Kitten’s Korner. Exposure to allergens can cause reactions in both adults and children. While it isn’t possible to completely eliminate allergens from our indoor environment, there are steps that you can take to reduce their presence and effects. Let’s take a look at some of the most common household allergens and ways to control them.
Dust mites – Dust mites are present in most homes and generally do not cause significant allergic reactions if kept at lower levels. These microscopic mites live in house dust, feeding on dust components such as bacteria, fungi, and dead skin cells from humans and pets. Mites do not bite, and prefer warm, humid conditions. To help control the levels of dust mites in the home, use mite-proof covers for bed pillows, mattresses, and box springs. Wash sheets weekly in water that’s at least 130°F / 54°C and have blankets and comforters cleaned regularly. It’s also a good idea to remove stuffed toys from the home; if you must keep a few, be sure to wash them frequently. Either eliminate carpets or vacuum them weekly with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter to trap dust. Lowering the humidity in the home to around 50 percent will also help control the dust mite population.
Mold – Contact with or inhaling mold spores can cause allergic reactions in some people. All types of mold need moisture to thrive, so eliminating sources of moisture is the first step in avoiding mold problems. In bathrooms with showers or tubs, open a window or use an exhaust fan to ventilate the area during and after use. If shower curtains and bath mats become moldy, wash them in hot water or replace them. Check for water leaks in ceilings and attics, under sinks, on ice-maker supply lines, and on water hoses connected to the washing machine and utility sink. During warm weather, using air conditioning will help keep the humidity levels down.
Pet dander – According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of North America, between 15 and 30 percent of people with allergies have reactions to cats and/or dogs, with cat allergies being more common. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t pet hair or fur that causes pet-related allergic reactions. Rather, it is the proteins in pet dander – the tiny particles of dead skin shed by the animal – or in the pet’s saliva or urine that cause these reactions. Short of finding a new home for your pet, there are a few steps you can take to reduce exposure to these allergens. Keep pets out of bedrooms, and be sure that their sleeping areas are easy to clean. Regular bathing of your pets can reduce the amount of allergens they spread. Thoroughly vacuum carpets and rugs if you have them; an even better choice is hard surface flooring such as hardwood or laminates.
In addition to the tips above, a regular cleaning regimen will go a long way to reducing allergens and allergic reactions in the home. Establish a weekly routine of damp-mopping hard flooring surfaces, and remove dust from carpets with a HEPA-equipped vacuum cleaner. Using a dust mask during these tasks can help prevent inhalation of allergen carriers such as house dust. Replace or clean filters from furnaces and air conditioning units according to the manufacturers’ instructions. By following these steps, your home will look cleaner, you’ll enjoy it more, and your family’s exposure to allergens will be significantly reduced.

The PGA Tour announced Wednesday that The Greenbrier, a historic luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., will be the title sponsor and host of the Greenbrier Classic for six years starting in 2010.
The tournament, to be held on the resort's Old White Course July 29-Aug. 1 next year, replaces the Buick Open. Buick ended a 51-year relationship with the Tour on Tuesday by dropping sponsorship of the Buick Open and Buick Invitational in San Diego because of General Motors' bankruptcy settlement.
Preliminary discussions with Greenbrier owner Jim Justice began roughly six months ago. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, who took part in the announcement at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, said Justice was instrumental in closing the deal.
"We knew going into this (economic) downturn we were going to have some turnover in our schedule," Finchem said. "We were delighted to be able to move quickly and make sure we didn't have a vacuum.
"I think the Tour players are going to love going to The Greenbrier. We are excited about this opportunity because of the enthusiasm we felt in our conversations with Jim Justice and his team. There is no doubt in our minds that every effort is going to be made to make this truly a quality event."
Justice, a West Virginian who was born and raised near The Greenbrier, set his sights on bringing a Tour event to The Greenbrier since he bought the resort in May.
"This will restore The Greenbrier from the standpoint of notoriety back to what The Greenbrier ought to be," Justice said at a news conference at his resort. "The Greenbrier is a five-star bloodline A to Z. It's been that since forever. We've lost one of our stars. We're going to get that star back."
The Greenbrier hosted the 1979 Ryder Cup and the 1994 Solheim Cup. It also hosted a Champions Tour event from 1985-87. Sam Snead, who won a record 82 times on Tour, served as Golf Professional Emeritus from 1994 until his death in 2002.
Tom Watson became emeritus in 2005.
"The Old White Course will make a tremendous tournament course in a traditional sense, and The Greenbrier will provide a great experience," Watson said.
Future dates of the event are yet to be determined, but Finchem said he envisions the tournament as ideal for the midsummer.
Finchem said the Tour will continue to talk with Buick and other "potential possibilities."
"After 50 years," he said, "we'd like to figure out a way to continue with Buick if at all possible down the road."

A West Virginia businessman, who made millions in farming and coal, is the new owner of the famed Greenbrier Resort.
The stunning announcement came today from The Greenbrier that Jim Justice has purchased the financially-troubled resort.
The purchase price was not disclosed. The purchase includes 80 percent of The Greenbrier Sporting Club which is an upscale housing development.
“I’m very excited to become part of one of America’s finest traditions,” Justice was quoted as saying in new release from the Greenbrier.

The announcement is a stunning development in the unfolding story of the luxurious resort.
Earlier this year, the Greenbrier filed for bankruptcy after losing $35 million last year. Owner CXS announced at the same time that it had entered into an agreement with the Marriott Corporation, creating an opportunity for the worldwide hotel chain to buy the resort.
Last week, the labor unions representing most of the 1,400 hundred workers at the Greenbrier County resort announced they had reached new labor agreements. The unions and CSX had been trying unsuccessfully for months to get new contracts.
The Greenbrier is a significant landmark in West Virginia as well as one of the most well-known luxury resorts in the world. However, the last few years have been rough for the resort.
Competing resorts offering more amenities have pulled business away from the Greenbrier as the resort’s costs have risen. Labor problems combined with the downturn in the economy also hurt.
Justice said he wants to look to the future.
“Our near-term goal is to give The Greenbrier a fresh start,” Justice said. Even though the current economy is taking its toll on the resort, we are going to take a long-term view by focusing on reclaiming our five-star status and making the right investments for future growth.”
CSX CEO Michael Ward called the surprise development a “great result.”
“While this is an entirely different kind of transaction than expected,” Ward said, “this is a great result for The Greenbrier, its employees, the community, and CSX.
Justice sent a letter to Greenbrier employees introducing himself and detailing his plans, including gambling.
“As part of our long-term growth plans, I think we should look seriously at the potential for ‘tasteful’ gaming at The Greenbrier,” Justice said. “It is certainly not our panacea, but done correctly it could add to our allure.”
Voters last election approved gambling at the Greenbrier and the legislature approved a bill this last session allowing the resort to keep a larger share of the profits than originally designed, but the same percentage as the race tracks.
Justice is a long-time West Virginia businessman who made millions in agriculture and coal.
The Raleigh County native and Marshall graduate joined the family business in 1976, the started Bluestone Farms the following year. That enterprise grew to include 50,000 acres in four states.
His business empire expanded even more when he took over Bluestone Industries and Bluestone Coal Corporation after the death of his father in 1993. A profile released by The Greenbrier said “Throughout the late 1990’s, Jim focused Bluestone on a massive growth program acquiring tens of thousands of acres of quality coal reserves along with production skyrocketing.”
Justice is also an avid sports fan; he coaches the girl’s high school basketball team at Greenbrier East.

GREENBRIER REAL ESTATE SERVICE was well represented at the GVBOR Continuing Education class on Real Estate Investment Opportunities. Provided by the Greenbrier Valley Board of REALTORS (GVBOR) a seven hour continuing education seminar was held at the Roland P. Sharp Alumni Center, located at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg, WV.

Lisa Merrill Spencer was the speaker, an independent lecturer who speaks across the United States and Canada. She is a member of the Advisory Council for the Department of Communications at Texas State University and is the recipient of an achievement award from the Governor of Missouri for her work in real estate and community development.
There were approximately 110 attendees that received their seven hours of continuing education. We enjoyed breakfast, and delicious snacks throughout the day provided by City National Bank, First National Bank of Ronceverte, and First Citizens Bank. Drinks were provided by Homes and Land. There were 12 vendors at this event providing information on their products. The other vendors participating in this event were: Arbonne, Jockey Person-to-Person Clothes, Sam's Club, State Farm Insurance, Wells Fargo, United Bank, Mountain Messenger, and Alcova Mortgage.
